Flora Nova

55 inches diameter × 12 inches overall depth
Hand-painted, three-dimensional wire sculpture
Algorithmically generated using Fibonacci and Voronoi geometry

Flora Nova is a meditation on the hidden architecture of nature—where mathematics, light, and organic growth become one.

Built from thousands of individually connected elements, the sculpture is generated through the interplay of Fibonacci spirals and Voronoi geometry, two mathematical systems that quietly shape the natural world. These same patterns appear in flowers unfolding toward the sun, the cellular structure of living organisms, branching coral, seashells, leaves, and even the movement of water and galaxies.

At its center, a sculptural bloom emerges from the surface, unfolding in layered spirals that seem to grow naturally from within the work itself. Waves of luminous aqua, emerald, turquoise, cobalt, and soft ivory radiate outward, creating a visual rhythm that shifts continuously as the viewer moves around the piece. Light filters through the open lattice, casting intricate shadows that become an extension of the sculpture, transforming the surrounding wall into part of the artwork.

Viewed from one perspective, Flora Nova evokes a flower opening at dawn. From another, it recalls the movement of ocean currents, a breaking wave, or the quiet depth of tropical waters. Others see cloud formations, galaxies, sea life, or celestial landscapes. It exists in the space between earth, sea, and sky—a work that never settles into a single interpretation.

Although substantial in scale at 55 inches in diameter with a 12-inch sculptural depth, the open wire construction gives the piece an unexpected sense of lightness. It may be installed directly on a wall or suspended in front of a window, where changing daylight passes through its geometry, allowing the sculpture to evolve throughout the day. Morning light, afternoon sun, and evening illumination each reveal a different character, making the work feel alive within its environment.

Flora Nova reflects Patty Madden’s exploration of computational geometry translated into handcrafted form. Every painted component, every connection, and every layer is assembled by hand, merging advanced algorithmic design with meticulous craftsmanship. The result is a sculpture that celebrates the profound relationship between mathematics and nature—a contemporary work that feels at once botanical, aquatic, and celestial.

Rather than depicting nature, Flora Nova reveals the invisible language from which nature is created. It invites viewers to slow down, discover new details with every glance, and experience the quiet harmony shared by flowers, oceans, and the stars.
